Windows Phone Mango release date well ahead of Nokia Windows Phone
By Jon on September 23rd, 2011
Windows Phone Mango is coming, and all the signs suggest that existing Windows Phone handset owners won’t have to wait for the release of the Nokia Windows Phone to see it. We run through the latest news – including some from Microsoft itself.
Microsoft slaps a time frame on it
In a recent post on the official Windows Phone blog, Eric Hautala spoke of “solid progress” on Windows Phone Mango, and that the company expects “to start rolling it out in the next week or two”.
Yep, that means that those of us who bought into the fledgling Windows Phone 7 platform during the first generation will get the sweet taste of Mango first – and around a month ahead of the unveiling of the supposed Windows Phone Mango flagship device from Nokia.
It’s a little uncertain as to when everyone will be getting this update, with Hautala clarifying that “by ‘roll out’ I mean we’ll be starting the actual delivery process – emphasis on starting”. So the first batch of updates could we hitting phones within days, but that’s not to say we’ll all be getting it so soon.

Networks confirm
Of course, when exactly you get hold of the Windows Phone Mango update will be dependent on your network operator, and whether they’re done testing and tweaking the software to their satisfaction. There are signs that many are ready to go, though.
According to WPCentral, one Germans network has revealed that its customers will be getting the Mango update from next week. Interestingly, HTC owners will get it first, followed by Samsung.
The website also uncovered a leaked email exchange from a US network revealing that Microsoft has approved the roll-out of the Mango update from September 27 – just four days from now.
Windows Phone Mango should be coming to a first generation device near you very soon, then. Our recommendation is to download the latest Zune software for PCs or Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac depending on your platform, as this is how the update will take place. Then keep an eye on Microsoft’s ‘Where’s my phone update?’ page.
