In the UK, the Samsung Galaxy S2 powerhouse is seen as the natural successor to the original Galaxy S. But in some parts of Europe a tweaked version of popular Android smartphone is being launched as its follow-up. Will it be coming to Blighty? Read on to find out.Samsung Galaxy S 2011 Edition specs

With the Samsung Galaxy S2 recently launched to critical acclaim (check out Fonehome’s five star review here) the appearance of the Galaxy S 2011 Edition seems like a frivolous and nonsensical release. Essentially a souped up version of the Galaxy S, it actually manages to bring enough improvements on its predecessor to warrant an upgrade but not enough power to frighten the S2.
Coming to the UK
Originally, the Samsung Galaxy S 2011 wasn’t earmarked for a UK release. However, Fonehome has just literally had official confirmation from Samsung that it will indeed be making an appearance in the UK later in the year. But when exactly is anyone’s guess.
Right now the handset is selling in Korea and Russia and is primed for the Netherlands very soon. And just to confuse matters further, the new Android smartie is dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S 2011 in Russia but the Galaxy S Plus in other areas of the Europe.
Design-wise it may look the identical to the Galaxy S but the 2011 Edition arrives in a fetching new metallic black coast and is bang up to date with Android 2.3 OS Gingerbread out of the box. The Galaxy S shipped with Android 2.1 Éclair and is only now being updated with the latest version.
The biggest enhancement has to be the processor. The Galaxy S growled along at 1GHz while the 2011 Edition roars with a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor, complete with Snapdragon chipset. According to GSM Arena, Qualcomm has gone on record stating it doesn’t drain anymore power than a 1GHz chip. But as you can see it still doesn’t match the speed of the S2’s dual-core.
Battery power has also been cranked up from a Li-Po 1500 mAh to a Li-ion 1650 mAh cell – same as the Galaxy S2. Elsewhere, the features remain pretty much the same as on the original Galaxy handset, including the eye-popping 4-inch Super AMOLED display.
By the time the 2011 Edition hits the UK, we expect to see the Galaxy S resigned to a modest prepay ranking and low cost monthly contract. This beefed up model will take up its position in the mid priced contracts; an affordable option for those whose budget can’t stretch to buying the flagship S2.
