Independent app store GetJar has removed the Opera Mini browser app from its roster following the launch of the Opera Mobile Store. Read on for more details.
The mobile app store battle goes well beyond platform holders like Apple, Google and Microsoft. Third party offerings are big business, which is why GetJar has taken steps to cut off a new and dangerous rival.
Opera launched its web-based Opera Mobile Store recently, and has found instant success, attracting 15 million users from 200 countries before it was even officially launched, and achieving more than 700,000 downloads per day. Opera claims to have around 140,000 apps available already, which places it very close to GetJar’s rather more specific number of 140,089.
GetJar has rejected the Opera Mini browser app due to violations of its terms and conditions. This is in reference to Opera including a direct link to its new app store from the Mini browser’s homepage. GetJar recently Tweeted that “one thing we can’t do is promote competing app stores.”
