The next iteration of the Android OS, after 3.0 Gingerbread, will be version 2.4, and will bear the name Ice Cream. Prepare for brain freeze in June 2011.
Android 2.4 was spotted within the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc phone at CES 2011, and while Sony Ericsson claimed that the 2.4 read-out was down to software corruption, Pocket-lint claims it has talked to sources confirming that 2.4 Ice Cream is on the way. Yep, even though it’ll be released after Android 3.0 Honeycomb, we’ll be skipping back to 2.x territory for Ice Cream.
In-line with Google’s new twice-a-year update schedule, we should see Android 2.4 released towards the middle of the year — around the time the iPhone 5 is set to land. Unfortunately, Pocket-lint couldn’t lure its sources into revealing their identities publically. With Android 3.0 Honeycomb looking to stick to tablet devices rather than smartphones, it’s likely that we’ll also see a 3.x update released around the same time.
With Google’s alphabetic naming policy still in effect, what do you think the next tablety instalment will be called? Jello? Jellybaby? Jam? Drop us your best guess in the comments below. The winner will be awarded with an immense feeling of satisfction…
