The Android Market has reached two new and important milestones. A billion apps have been downloaded, and there are more than 100,000 apps available.
These figures are based on estimates by AndroLib, the top Android app directory. The Android Market’s growth has followed an exponential curve over the last year, with more than 15,000 apps released in June this year, against just 1669 in the same month last year.
However, expansion alone isn’t enough to make the Android Market a true rival for the iPhone’s excellent App Store. Navigation is still sub-par, burying top paid-for apps underneath thousands of more popular freebies. It’s something we hope Google will address in Android 3.0.
Enough with the doom and gloom though, because the popularity of Android apps remains something to celebrate. Developer support continues to increase as Android gains more traction within the smartphone market. Now we just need the back-end to catch up.
