An Israeli finance newspaper has reported that the Android platform will get its own music store later this year alongside the release of Android 3.0.
Israeli paper Calcalist talked to Android product manager Gaurav Jain, who confirmed that a cloud-based music download service would open its doors later this year — also saying that mobile would play an important part in the service from day one.
Google’s upcoming plans for a music store sound like a melding of Apple’s iTunes with a music streaming service like Spotify. The company acquired music streaming experts Simplify Media earlier this year, which poured some petrol on rumours of Google’s music store aspirations.
However, don’t go thinking that Google has managed to get one over on Apple yet. Apple is on the verge making very similar moves itself, having acquired music streaming service Lala in late 2009. We’ll all be moving up into the cloud by late 2010, or early 2011, apparently. You can bet that both Google and Apple will try to get you to take a trip to their cloud castles.
