HTC Hero Android 2.1 update arrives… finally

Written by Andrew on June 16, 2010 – 9:30 am View Comments

heroThe HTC Hero Android 2.1 update has arrived in Europe. With any luck, UK HTC Hero users will receive the update in the next few days.

UPDATE — It looks as though this is yet another minor update, not the Android 2.1 udpate we’ve been waiting for. Watch out for flying pigs, folks, there’s a chance it might finally appear at the sight of them.

The HTC Hero Android 2.1 update is being deployed OTA (over the air). This means that you won’t have to do anything to  get the update, just wait for the notification to appear on your phone and confirm the install. Make sure a data connection is enabled though, or you’ll miss out on this long-awaited update.

This HTC Hero update has become a sore point for many Hero users. Promised deadlines have been missed over the past handful of months, chipping away at the confidence buyers have in HTC’s Android update policy. Hopefully HTC will clean up its act from now on though, and supply other Androids like the HTC Desire and Legend with Android 2.2 updates before too long.

Let us know when the update appears on your mobile.

Looks like it! That’s very disappointing. We’ll be on the look-out for more on exactly what’s going on.

    Yesterday i received my update.
Bit disappointing actually, because it stil says that my Hero is running on a 1.5 firmware version. So i still can’t download the newest apps on the market.

Update required before 2.1 update. 2.1 coming before the end of June… or so they say.

The update users are currently receiving is a preparatory one. It updates the YouTube application and fixes many buga within this. It also updates the stock 1.5 OTA update client to enable the handset to receive the FOTA 2.1 ROM which HTC say is still on track for end of the month. Hopefully the full 2.1 update will remedy the 3G/HSDPA switching issues that have plagued many users since the phone’s release.

Apparently the update can be forced by advancing the handset’s time by a month or a year to trick the current update client in to checking for a new update. I have tried this myself but to no avail.

I have reached the end of my patience with the Hero. The lack of Android update has left me in the dark ages. The constant delays has made me decide to jump ship and get the new iPhone when it comes out later this month. The Hero was nice for a few months until it’s hardware became outdated as did the OS. However the OS could (and should have been updated). Sorry Google and HTC, I was the anti-apple, but that has changed and I will soon be a (hopefully satisfied) iPhone owner.

Make sure your phone has the ‘last’ update on the HTC website. If it’s not on the last rom update the phone will never see the first of the two updates. i.e it will never look for them.
Worked for me cause mine was never coming through. Updated to the one on the HTC Hero support page and Voila. Prompt for the pre 2.1 update!..
