HTC Desire vs HTC Legend vs Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 vs Google Nexus One vs HTC Tattoo – Screen
By Andrew on April 26th, 2010
The screen is all important when it comes to your new Android handset. Not only its size, but also its brightness and the technology it uses, especially as the latter can have a major effect on battery life. We’ll be assessing how the size of each shapes the phones design, and how the screen works in low and bright light conditions.
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10
The Xperia X10’s screen is the biggest of any of the phones on test here. At 4 inches, it’s more than ample for actually watching movies. It’s bright and crisp, with 400×854 pixels. However, as it’s TFT rather than AMOLED, you don’t quite get the same sharp colours as the HTC Desire or HTC Legend. It does have an anti-scratch coating however, which means it’s OK to stick it in your pocket with coins and keys without panicking too much.
HTC Desire
The 3.7-inch AMOLED number on the HTC Desire means that the Desire is not a small number. But it looks absolutely gorgeous and is so stunningly bright and clear that we had to check if we had the brightness turned up to 11 (we didn’t).
There’s much less glare here than with the Sony Experia X10. It’s a similar 480×800 resolution but looks markedly better in everyday conditions, make no mistake.
Google Nexus One
The screen on the Nexus One is exactly the same as the HTC Desire one. That means 480×800 pixels, AMOLED skills and 3.7 inches. It’s beautiful and bright and Google’s flashy, retro wallpapers really do look bright and sharp every time you bring the phone out sleep. It’s also ideal for watching movies.
HTC Legend
The 320×480 HVGA resolution and 3.2-inch size mean the screen on the Legend isn’t quite up to par with the X10, Desire and Nexus One. That’s not to say it isn’t great to look at and use. Just that the other panels are even better. It’s very bright and clean, but it could do with being a tad larger for our liking. Watch more than half an hour of video and your peepers might hurt a tad.
More after the break…
HTC Tattoo
The Tattoo has the lowest resolution of any phone on test, with just 320 x 240 QVGA. It’s only 2.8-inches too and therefore much smaller than even the HTC Legend. It’s ok for looking at texts and web pages, but not up to scratch for when it comes to viewing videos and even YouTube clips. That said, it again has to be remembered that this is a budget number.
Verdict
The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 does have the biggest screen, but it’s not quite the best of the bunch. We’re giving that title equally to the Google Nexus One and the HTC Desire, both of which have AMOLED and both of which have the same resolution. The Legend’s effort is great and the Tattoo’s is ample for such a cut-price mobile.
