Steve Jobs himself has confirmed that the new 4.0 version of the iPhone operating system will not come to the original iPhone 2G, suggesting the device will no longer be supported with any future updates.
This news came after Jobs responded to an emailed question from a German Apple fan asking whether the iPhone old timer would get one last chance to dance with the cool kids, with the iPhone OS 4.0 update. Jobs’s reply was the characteristically curt “Sorry, no”.
With the new iPhone OS 4.0 adding several processor-intensive features like multitasking, it’s no great surprise that the iPhone 2G has been struck off the guest list. The recent iPhone OS 4.0 presentation focused on how Apple overcame technical difficulties in bringing us the new features the operating system promises, suggesting that the lesser iPhone 2G hardware simply wouldn’t be up to the task. After all, even the iPhone 3G won’t get multitasking when the update lands.
The solution? You could always fork out for an iPhone 3GS. Or wait for the fabled iPhone 4G. Better get saving, then.
