Hurrah, it has just been revealed that Gears of War is coming to iPhone. However, don’t expect it to come knocking at the App Store’s doors any time soon.
Epic’s Josh Adams spoke of their intention to eventually bring the massively popular shooter series Gears of War to iPhone – and why wouldn’t they – but also made it clear that it’ll be no easy task. As he says, “You can’t expect to take Gears of War, hit a button and expect it to work on iPhone.”
He also said that Gears of War would only work on iPhone 3GS because of the Unreal Engine 3′s reliance on OpenGL ES 2.0, the 3D platform that the engine runs off. Epic demonstrated the engine running on the iPhone 3GS back in December, and we sincerely doubt it’ll end up working on the less powerful original iPhone and iPhone 3G handsets.
Caveats aside, Gears of War fans have reason to celebrate, especially if you’ve already got an iPhone 3GS or are planning on iPad-ing it up this April.
