Got an Android phone? You’re probably a man

Written by Andrew on February 26, 2010 – 12:00 pm 3 Comments

actionmanAccording to stats released by mobile advertising giant Admob, Android is the most male dominated smartphone operating system around, with 73 percent of Android users male.

Admob surveyed 963 mobile users, and all other smartphone operating systems demonstrated a more even male-female split than Android. However, all of them leaned towards the male side – iPhone turned out 57 percent male, 43 percent female.

What is it that makes Android such a male draw? Could it be the name, with its sci-fi leanings? It’s possible, but then your average phone buyer will be looking at the handset’s name rather than that of the operating system. Few Androids are quite as pretty as Apple’s iPhone, but there were a few good-looking Android phones in 2009.

We hope the gender gap will close up a little as Android continues to grow in 2010. If you’re a lady with an Android, why not give us a shout in the comments section – let us know how you’re getting on with your phone.

Agreed – great graphic! I am a thoroughly female Android devotee, so count me among the 27%. I hate heels, though! ;)

Android phones are still pretty new, and as such have a largely “geek” user base, the so-called “early adopters.” Now, I realize that there are a few girl geeks out there, but most of them are guys, and that’s where your 73% comes from. I’m sure it will even out as Android gets more and more mainstream.
