Apple iTunes has dished out 10 billion songs
We’re normally more interested in the App Store than iTunes in general, but this figure got out jaws dropping a bit – Apple’s iTunes has sold more than 10 billion songs. That’s a lot of Bryan Adams albums.
The iTunes Store opened in 2003, just under seven years ago, but nine billion of the full 10 billion song downloads have occurred in the last four years. This equates to around 6 million songs a day on average, which – let’s be honest – is absolutely mental.
Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas have reason to celebrate too, as each act has two songs in the top 10 bestsellers of all time list. For Lady Gaga it’s Poker Face and Just Dance, while The Black Eyed Peas have I Gotta Feeling and Boom Boom Pow in the chart. What this shows is that downloads have only been increasing year-on-year as none of these songs is that old – helped by the continuing high sales of the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The Apple App Store isn’t too far behind, having announced its 3-billionth download back in early January this year. Congrats all round to Apple’s iTunes bods. If you want to send us a crate of Champagne so we can join in the celebration, Apple, you know our address…
