Windows Phone 7 Series phones to come in three flavours
By Andrew on February 24th, 2010
Details about the first Windows Mobile 7 handsets have been revealed in a podcast featuring employees of Microsoft Australia. It sounds like it might be quite a limiting OS.
Windows Mobile 7 was revealed last week at Mobile World Congress 2010, but no specifics on the hardware itself were unveiled. In the Frankly Speaking podcast, a pair of Microsoft employees talked about how Windows Phone 7 Series, or Windows Mobile 7, phones would fit into one of three chassis types.
The first is what we’ve come to think of as the standard smartphone form factor, with a large touchscreen, a 1GHz processor and graphics chip. Next is the slide-out Qwerty design, while the last is thought to be a candybar design, although the podcasting duo was less sure about this last option.
While these are the form factors we are used to in smartphone design, if they are the only spec designs that the OS supports, it will prove limiting for manufacturers. Could Microsoft be planning to have a hand in all Windows Phone 7 Series handsets, contracting out manufacturers to produce them as we see Google doing with its Androids? We’ll have to wait until later this year to find out.
