A delve into the latest iPhone SDK 3.2 has revealed elements that suggest video calling is coming to the next iPhone.
Within the SDK’s telephony framework bloggers found images with file names relating to accepting and declining video – which only really makes sense within the context of a video call. 9to5mac also delved further into the SDK’s code, finding references to “videochat” and “iChat”.
Current iPhone hardware is unable to video call for the simple reason that it doesn’t feature a front-facing camera. Unless these are redundant pieces of code, which seems unlikely, these new details suggest the next iPhone will feature a front-facing camera.
Video calling has been a feature available on many smartphones for years, but has never been considered a must-have within the consumer market. More generous mobile Internet allowances have made using video calling a bit more accessible recently, but do you really want to talk to someone face-to-face on your mobile when it means you have to hold it out in front of you?
We’re not convinced video calling will be an iPhone 4G killer app, but we’ll be sure to fill you in with any more details as they appear.
