Nokia shows off Mobile Radar concept

Written by Linsey on January 28, 2010 – 12:00 pm Comment

Nokia_Mobile_RadarThese days, multitasking smartphones are capable of being many things, but here’s one we haven’t come across before: mobile radar devices.
Until now, that is. Nokia has been showing off a new concept idea rather predictably called Mobile Radar, which it says can measure distance, speed and direction of moving objects just by pointing a phone at them…

Nokia Mobile Radar uses an active radar sensor built in into the phone itself to track objects, using essentially the same technology as the police use in their radars, according to the clever bods at Nokia Research Centre in Helsinki.

Being radar-based, the system isn’t put off by objects in the way, such as doors or pockets, meaning you don’t even have to pick the phone up to use the system.

Nokia says the potential applications for Mobile Radar are virtually endless, from gesture-controlled mobile gaming to being used in home security systems or at sporting events.

Sadly, though, it’s very much still just a concept, with Nokia having no plans at all to shoehorn it into any of its forthcoming smartphones any time soon.
