HTC Hero Android 2.1 update put back to March?
Since our first glimpse of the Google Nexus One we’ve been dying to get our hands on Android 2.1 for a play. And while that itch has now been scratched thanks to our Nexus One review, we still can’t wait to see the latest version of the OS on a phone we can actually buy in the UK.
But it seems that wait is set to continue, as the HTC Hero will now only be getting its Android update in March.
The Hero is still parked on Android 1.5 – the version it was launched with last year – with firmware updates to Android 1.6, 2.0 and now 2.1 thus far having passed it by. The problem is reportedly getting HTC’s Sense UI to play along with the updated OS.
However, Irish network provider Meteor claims to have some good news – that HTC will be updating the Hero straight from 1.5 to the same Version 2.1 seen on the Nexus One. The bad news is that it’ll only be happening in March.
Posting on the Meteor forum, adminstrator Glynn first claimed: “We’ve been in contact with HTC and they have said that version 2.0 will be available in and around March of this year. HTC sense UI will be tightly integrated with Android 2.0, as with other versions of the software. Because of this new versions of the software take a while to develop. As for 2.1 this would also need to be developed and there is no update on this.”
He then updated his comments: “Just got another update on this and HTC have said they are releasing 2.1 on the Hero and we are hoping to have this available by the end of March.”
There remains no firm date on when we’ll be getting the Nexus One itself here in the UK, though Vodafone has been confirmed as the first European provider.
