apple_logoThe Apple iPad has just been announced, but as is traditional we were first treated to a rundown of the recent successes of Apple – and one of the more astonishing claims made by Steve Jobs today is that Apple is now “the largest mobile device company in the world”.

At the event in San Francisco, Jobs claimed “We’re the largest mobile device company in the world. Larger than Sony, bigger than Samsung”. According to Jobs, Apple is even bigger than Nokia in terms of revenue.

The company, which was formed 34 years ago has released projected profits for Q1 2010 – a whopping $15.6bn.

And one of the biggest recent successes for Apple has, of course, been the iTunes App Store. Jobs announced this evening that there are now 140,000 apps available from the store and that to date, 3bn apps have been downloaded. That certainly puts the nascent opposition of Android Market and Ovi Store into perspective…
