The next update to its Android mobile OS will be called “Froyo”. Short for “frozen yoghurt”, it’s just the latest, slightly healthier, homage from the Mountain View tech giants, following in alphabetical order from Eclair (Android 2.1), Doughnut (1.6) and Cupcake (1.5) off Google’s update production line.
Android’s senior product manager Erick Tseng revealed the tasty snippet of Android update info in an interview with Engadget. Most predictions seemed to have it pegged as “flan” but Google decided to go the fat-free dairy route instead.
Aside from the name, however, Tseng remained closed-mouthed on any further details, such as how big an evolutionary step forward Froyo will be from Eclair, and of course the most important detail – when we’ll be seeing it, though it seems a safe bet that it’ll be around mid-year.
Android continues to pick up market share momentum on the back of a string of high-profile handset launches in the second half of 2009.
Android’s slice of the mobile OS pie (flan?) has doubled to 4% in December. While that may still be a narrow wedge, more significant is the fact that one in five surveyed said they’d be opting for an Android smartphone in the next three months.
