The Nokia Ovi store is to be completely overhauled, making it faster, more reliable and easier to use.
The current version of Nokia‘s online store was introduced in February, but according to Nokia VP George Linardos, it was always intended as a stopgap solution.
“All the while there’s been this new platform being built in the background, which we’ll be talking about in the next couple of months and launching in the Spring with what we’re calling 2.0,” Linardos said.
The revamped Ovi Store will be rebuilt from the ground up. Initially it will include some legacy elements from the current version, but these will be completely phased out over the following months.
Linardos explained that the current Ovi Store was an umbrella solution compatible with all Nokia’s past content distribution methods, but its successor would draw a line in the sand and introduce a single, new distribution method, and that’s what is taking the time.
Not that Nokia is unhappy with the current Ovi Store’s performance. “We’re doing just under one million downloads a day, and our download numbers are growing 100% month-on-month,” Linardos claimed.
Apart from downloadable third-party apps, Ovi Store also plays host to other content such as wallpapers, ringtones and games.
