Vodafone shows off iPhone speed test
Vodafone’s iPhone might not be hitting the shelves until 2010, but the network has already thrown down the gauntlet to O2 and Orange by claiming the fastest video download speed for the iPhone in a recent test. Read on to find out more…
Vodafone has brought the fight the the networks in a recent newsletter sent to anyone who pre-registered interest in the iPhone. Rather than concentrate on a pricing battle, Vodafone has focused the fight on network performance.
Vodafone claims that it’s been testing its network access across the UK and found that it bested O2 and Orange on video download speeds. In fact, when watching a 10-minute YouTube clip the Vodafone iPhone wiped the floor in terms of download time.
Vodafone also took the opportunity to pimp Vodafone Access Gateway, which lets you supercharge your home 3G coverage if you’re in a patchy area. Given the amount of common complaints about iPhone network coverage on O2, it looks as if the next iPhone war will concentrate on performance in the wild. Let battle commence!

I’d be interested to put them side by side, but wonder how average Joes will manage that before making a choice. Maybe Apple will do that in its stores? That’d be pretty cool.

Yeah gotta see it in the flesh. Even to get some comparison figures on the download speeds would help. Come on, getcha stats out!

Anything is better than o2’s coverage. Forget 3G: I’m happy when I get network at all. Between dropped connections and it simply being sloooow, the experience is really letting Apple down.

I’d also be interesting to see some speed tests not only between iphone across networks but also between the iphone and the latest crop of android phones (particularly the new droid) once it/they appear on more networks obviously. Maybe even throw in the new BB’s too.
Curious to see vodafone’s pricing plans too….

It’s all too little too late. O2 haven’t even started using incentives for people to stay yet
there will be goodies in store for all the current Satan phone users

@ Drunken Max: Surely everyone’s sick of O2’s expensive hold on the iPhone by now. Sure they’ll throw in some token stuff but they’re still stupidly pricey.

O2 have actually already announced that they will offer free home broadband to it’s iphone users. http://bit.ly/49S6Y4 BS (via @electricpig)
They have also announced that they will now unlock their customers iphone’s, legitimately. http://j.mp/4bdoF (via @the appleblog)
but i’m not a fan of O2 for various past experiences so am happy other networks are now able to offer it and hopefully punch O2 in the face on the pricing plans and bring down their ridiculous prices…although Orange’s pricing was v. disappointing.

It’s unfair to compare three networks side by side right now. Vodafone cannot claim their 3G network is faster and reliable and guarantee they won’t get hit by the same problem that O2 had until they have reached the same volume of users.
By the way, I’m a Vodafone user, but looking for signing IPhone contract soon.
