Nokia Maemo gets full-fat Firefox
The first full version of Firefox for mobile will be released in December, and it will be Nokia’s Maemo platform that gets it first. Firefox beta has been making great strides on Maemo in recent weeks, and it was clear Mozilla were just putting on the finishing touches ahead of a full launch. here’s the lowdown…
Despite the modest Nokia Maemo user base at present – the first native handset will be the Nokia N900 – Mozilla chose to focus on the platform because “it’s open and it’s built with the internet in mind.”
Once Maemo rollout is complete, Mozilla will focus on Firefox for Windows Mobile – already in alpha testing – and has confirmed that versions for Android and Symbian are also in the pipeline.
But the company has ruled out any chance of seeing Firefox on the iPhone. “The issue is more with Apple than with us because they control the App Store and because they refuse applications which compete with something that is already on the phone,” Mozilla Europe’s president Tristan Nitot said recently. “It’s unlikely that we’ll see a version of Firefox running on the iPhone.”
BlackBerry users are also in for a disappointment, with Nitot claiming its lack of power made it unsuitable for Mozilla’s “bells and whistles”.
“The list of operating systems we want to support in the mobile world is already pretty long – I guess BlackBerry would be one of the last in our priority list,” he said.
