Top 10 Nokia N900 apps

Written by Linsey on November 24, 2009 – 9:00 am 15 Comments

nokia-n900You’ve seen the Nokia N900 up close and checked out just how fast the new Maemo 5 can fly. Now it’s time to put that new OS to the test, by piling on all the apps the multitasking Nokia handset can handle. Want to know which are the must-have phone programs to load up? Read on and we’ll tell you…

Almost all of these can be found on the Maemo Select app store you can launch from the Nokia N900’s homescreen, but where that’s not the case we’ve provided a link for you.

1. iNES
Sure, the Nokia N900 can handle fancy 3D graphics, but they don’t make games like they used to, do they? You can now relive your childhood and idle away hours on the bus playing Super Mario Bros 3. Not up your street? There are Sega, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance emulators available too.

2. gPodder
You can stash all your music inside the Nokia N900’s huge 48GB of boot space, but if you want the latest from all your favourite stations and celebs, you want gPodder, a powerful and easy to use podcast downloader. It’ll pull all your favourite shows down for you automatically, no cables required.

mozilla-firefox-logo3. Firefox
The Nokia N900 browser is solid enough already, but Firefox Mobile for the Nokia N900 brings some excellent additions, including fully functioning Google Maps with location, easy to reach bookmarks, and the incredible plug-in, Weave. It syncs your surfing with Firefox on a desktop, so you can even look at what tabs are open on your PC straight from your Nokia N900. You can find Firefox Mobile here.

4. FriendStatus
Shows all your friends’ status updates on instant messaging clients on your Nokia N900, and keeps a record of them too. It’s an easy way to check out what a specific person’s been saying online, if you fancy a bit of Facebook stalking.

Your Nokia N900 records fantastic quality video. It also packs a fast 3G connection. Put them both to good use by streaming what you’re filimg live over the internet! Once you’re done, it’ll be uploaded to to preserve for posterity. The one touch recording option makes it incredibly easy to use, and there are settings to make streams public or private, and completely configurable.

6. TouchSearch
TouchSearch is a simple little widget that lets you search the internet straight from your homescreen, similar to the Google widget on Android phones such as the HTC Tattoo. The difference is you can choose what type of engine to use, be it straight search (Google), location (Google Maps), shopping, or even eBay. There seems to be a widely reported problem of the widget disappearing after installation, but we found it appeared on the desktop a few minutes later, and it works perfectly otherwise.

ap-screen-500x3007. AP News Desktop Widget
Your Nokia N900 is always with you and always on, so make the best use of that by getting breaking headlines delivered straight to your profile screen. AP is one of the biggest news agencies in the world, so everything that comes through is up to the minute and legit.

8. Evernote
Evernote is a fantastic free service that lets you stash all your notes, from memos to pics and dictations, and keeps them all securely online for you. Record a clip when you’re out and about with your Nokia N900 and it’ll be ready to pull up on the desktop when you get back to the office. Evernote integrates perfectly on the Maemo 5, and will simply appear as a sharing option on media capture.

bounce-game2-500x300 copy9. Bounce Evolution
Although there aren’t many 3D games available yet, the Nokia N900 should be the gadget that pushes Maemo into the mainstream. Bounce is a fun, free demo of just what the Nokia N900 is capable of, and it’s nothing short of stunning, making full use of the phone’s sensitive tilt controls to roll a cute blob around a level.

10. AlmostTI Graphing Calc Emulator

This is the real reason why they don’t let you use phones in exams – any science and maths students will love this handy, full-blown graphical calculator app for the Nokia N900, which tots up and shows all those confusedly equations on the double. Oh, and unlike the real thing, it’s free.

I know it’s early doors compared to the iPhone, but when you see these running on the N900, they’re pretty impressive. I think that these show amazing potential for the N900

My favorite, essential app is FBreader. Without that, I wouldn’t have bought my n800.
