10 best Nokia E72 apps
The Nokia E72 is the latest update to Nokia’s range of business-minded QWERTY handsets but, once you’ve unboxed it and finished playing with the lovely keyboard, what then? Here are the 10 best apps for your Nokia E72…
Gravity
£Free (10-day trial)
The best Twitter client on Nokia phones by a country mile, Gravity has everything you need to start tweeting with the pros. Supports URL shorteners, picture uploading (using Twitpic, etc) and multiple user IDs.
JoikuSpot
£Free
JoikuSpot is an easy-peasy tethering app that turns your phone into a portable wireless router. Run JoikuSpot and you can connect laptops, iPods, games systems and more to you phone and let them use its 3G connection to browse the web. The non-free upgrade lets you do more and supports secure connections.
Shazam
£Free (14-day trial)
A near miraculous app that will identify almost any song played into your E72’s microphone. Use it to settle arguments, find tracks you hear snippets of on the radio or bare-facedly cheat at your pub quiz’s ‘name that tune’ round.
PinPoints
£Free
Find a location using a Google Maps plugin and then send ‘Pinpoints’ to your mobile or those of your friends via SMS. A simple way to send someone directions or to make sure you know where you are going.
Skyfire
£Free
A superb third-party web browser that will run on your E72 handset. It uses proxy servers and clever caching techniques to speed up web browsing, and is able to render web pages – even embedded videos – almost as you would see them on a desktop machine. A huge improvement on the default Nokia browser, Skyfire is a must have.
Fring
£Free
A brilliant combination of instant messaging client (supporting all the major forms of online chat) social networking status updater and – best of all – Voice Over IP internet phone. Use Skype or Fring’s own service to get free or cheap calls using your phone’s internet connection (wifi recommended).
Battery Extender
£6.00
The E72 has pretty good standby and talk time, but it is always worth trying to squeeze more juice out of your phone. With Battery Extender you can turn your phone into an electric miser by selectively turning off power-hungry processes and features like GPS or the back light. Set it to Max Battery mode and you might be able to leave your charger at home next time you go on holiday.
Advanced Call Manager
£17.99
A bit pricey, this one, but worth it if you get lots of calls and like your peace and quiet. Advanced Call Manager will filter incoming calls according to rules you set and either let them through to you, send them to voice mail, play a ‘busy, please call again’ message or respond with an SMS. You can filter by number, time or even where you are located (”don’t bother me when I am in work” etc.) and all messages are user definable. It’s like having a PA in your pocket.
MeCanto
£Free
Internet radio like Spotify or Last.FM are all very well, but you can’t beat having access to your own music. If you have a big collection, though, you might find it tricky to squeeze on your phone. MeCanto lets you share all you music from an internet-connected PC and access it on your phone anywhere you can get a decent signal.
ABBYY Business Card Reader
19.95 Euros
This is a great app for the more business-minded E72 owner. ABBYY BCR will turn your phone’s camera into a scanner for reading business cards. Take a pic of a card and the clever optical recognition software will read all the information from it and use it to create an entry in your address book. If you have ever wandered around a conference or expo gathering business cards this will be a huge time saver.
