Palm Pre finally rocks up in the UK

Written by Ren on October 16, 2009 – 10:30 am One Comment

Palm PreAnother day, another handset. The Palm Pre has finally arrived on these shores after what seems like an eternity of our American cousins lauding it over us. But is this really the iPhone 3GS beater that Palm hopes it’ll be? Read on to find out all the details on Palm’s webOS-toting touchscreen mobile phone

Having been tantalised with the unveiling of the new BlackBerry Storm 2 and given a release date for the upcoming Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 yesterday, today sees the arrival of another mobile phone vying for space on the ever-burgeoning smartphone market: the Palm Pre.

Exclusively arriving on O2 today the handset will be in direct competition over here with the iPhone 3GS and the likes of the Storm 2 and Samsung H1. But can it really compete, having taken so long to get here? Here’s a reminder of the Palm Pre’s specs to let you decide for yourselves.

The Pre sports a 3.1-inch, 320×480-pixel touchscreen with accelerometer, that’s great for flitting around apps and checking out your media files. It only has 8GB of internal storage, but it’s Wi-Fi-enabled and has HSDPA for nippy web-browsing. Palm’s also thrown in a 3.15-megapixel camera with an LED flash for your photography needs and all this is wrapped up in the ultra-friendly webOS package.

But is all this ultimately enough to take on the UK’s smartphone giants? It’s taken so long for the Palm Pre to hit these shores, has it missed a trick? Only time will tell…

Astonihingly, apart from a big poster in front of the door heralding the Pre, there was not a single Pre to be seen inside the O2 shop next to Liverpool Street station.

I often wonder what the point of these shops is… they make it really hard to actually try out revolutionary phones. A vending machine could do better.
