Google Maps Navigation: free satnav for Android 2.0!
Google has just outed Google Maps Navigation, a new satnav app for Android 2.0 mobile phones. And the best part? It’s totally free, serving up not only turn-by-turn navigation but live traffic info, plus satellite and street views.
And there’s more: Google Maps Navigation will, on certain phones, work with a specially designed in-car docking station, which’ll start it up automatically and make using it in your motor that little bit simpler.
It’s difficult to overstate the importance of the fact that Google Maps Navigation is free. Until now, you’ve always had to shell out a few quid for proper satnav (such as TomTom on the iPhone) on a mobile phone, but Google has completely changed the game with yesterday’s announcement.
Google Maps Navigation will debut on the Motorola Droid in the US, which launches (complete with Android 2.0) on 6th November. We don’t yet know when – or even if – it’ll ever make its way outside of the US though: Google currently has licensing data for that region only, so until that gets sorted we won’t be getting any free satnav lovin’ in the UK.
