iPhone gets Amazon app – with genius photo recognition feature!

Written by Sam on October 26, 2009 – 12:45 pm No Comment

iphone_amazonAmazon has pulled the wrappers off a spanking new shopping app for the iPhone – and it comes with a truly nifty feature called Amazon Remembers. See something you like the look of when you’re out and about? Take a snap, send it to Amazon and they’ll find your item in the shop, emailing you a link so that you can bag it for yourself. Hit the jump to find out if it works…

Sounds almost too good to be true, right? Well, the guys over at ElectricPig gave it a spin, taking a picture of a DAB radio and whizzing it Amazon’s way. Before two minutes was up, the retailer had returned with a link to the precise item.

Of course, results could vary and Amazon stresses that Amazon Remembers is an “experimental” function. Still, there are plenty of other reasons to get the app. It’s free, for one thing. More importantly, it offers access to millions of products on your mobile phone, both on Amazon and its partner companies.

You can browse products and then purchase them using your existing Amazon account (which means there’s no need to re-enter your address and payment method). In a nice little touch, when you add something to your shopping basket, a tiny thumbnail of the item tumbles down the screen and into the basket icon – you can see that for yourself in our image to the upper right.

The Amazon app works with the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS (plus the iPod Touch). Now all Amazon has to do is do the same with Android and BlackBerry phones, and almost everyone’ll be happy…
