BlackBerry Storm 2: 5 reasons why it beats the Storm

Written by Mike on October 21, 2009 – 12:00 pm Comment

Storm clashYou’ve checked all the info on the BlackBerry Storm 2 and you’ve shovelled all the hands-on photos on to your eyeballs. But why does the Storm 2 the original Storm look more like a gust of wind? Here are five reasons why…

1. Touchscreen tinkering
The BlackBerry Storm 2 sports the same name for its clever proddable display, SurePress, but RIM’s made a few subtle improvements that make more of a difference than Timbaland putting his name to your song. Although it clicks down without giving you hassle when on, now when you flick off the BlackBerry Storm 2, the screen on the mobile phone stays firm. You won’t bust it up putting it in your bag, unless you carry sharp implements in your backpack. Which would be odd.

2. Wi-Fi
As fast as the 3G reception is on the BlackBerry Storm, sometimes it’s just not possible to pick up a signal in the real world – if you live in a bedsit inside a concrete bunker say. Or more realistically, in the countryside. Still want to chomp on fast net access though? If you’re in a hotspot you can, as the BlackBerry Storm 2 adds in Wi-Fi to lash it up online on the cheap.

3. A smoother face
RIM’s given the BlackBerry Storm 2 the best a man can get, and shaved all the pesky tactile buttons off the front of the phone. Where the original Storm sported individual buttons for call, hang up, back and menu, they’ve now been merged into the SurePress display. The advantage for you? As well as lighting up and looking much smoother, you’ll get less crud creeping in between the keys, dirtying up the handset and even stopping buttons from working properly. Nothing to see here though, folks.

4. A new shell
The original BlackBerry Storm looked just like any other BlackBerry, with its instantly recognisable silver lining. The BlackBerry Storm 2 on the other hand goes for a much more subtle graphite grey. It sounds like nitpicking, but if you scope our hands-on photos, you’ll see how much more swish it makes it look. Combine that with the tightly fitting metal back cover, and you’ve got a multimedia smartphone you won’t be afraid to whip out in the board room either.

5. It’s faster
Do we need to say more? RIM’s brought its finest minds together, knocked their skulls into each other and told them to crack on with speeding up the BlackBerry Storm 2. And they did it. Even on the naked eye, swiping and poking around on the BlackBerry Storm 2 is faster and more responsive than numero uno, to the point where you wouldn’t want to go back once you’ve tried it. Pay rise time, chaps!

And one why it’s not…

Same camera, same resolution
If you were looking for more megapixels or a sharper screen, you’re out of luck. The BlackBerry Storms both pack a 3.2MP camera, while it’s fine for Facebook photos, if you’re looking for a BlackBerry with multimedia skills and not so bothered about how fast on the draw it is with messaging, videos and photos look just as good on the original’s screen. Choices, choices…
