Google has on more than one occasion eschewed the chance to make hardware, but that looks set to change after sources have suggested that Google will release an Android smartphone of its very own. What does that mean for the rest of the mobile phone manufacturers? Will it be as awesome as everything else Google produces? And when will it be available? Find out after the jump…
According to TheStreet.com “Design sources from within Google” have revealed that the Big G will be leaping into the hardware market with an Android smartphone of its very own, taking on the likes of the HTC Tattoo (above) and Hero head on.
So what’s known about this Google Phone? Well, according to the report Google will work closely with a partner – most likely to be HTC given the amount of Android handsets it has released and its expertise in the area – to produce a handset as quickly as possible. Just how soon is still unclear, but sometime next year is the best guess.
The report goes on to say that the phone could well sport the ultra-speedy Qualcomm processor, which would put it in an elite group of super-speedy handsets which includes the Toshiba TG01.
Google Android has already proved immensely popular, reaching its first birthday with a healthy 7% of the smartphone market worldwide. A Google-own smartphone sporting the operating system would most likely see that figure increase significantly, given Google’s reputation for getting excellent technology into the hands of the masses.
