Apple iPhone 3GS: meet the rivals

Apple iPhone 3GS rivalsThe Apple iPhone 3GS might have only just been announced for Vodafone’s 2010 line-up, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until next year to get an awesome multimedia mobile phone. This little lot are capable of delivering your photo, music, movie and mobile needs this year. Check out the iPhone 3GS’s main rivals after the jump…

1. Sony Ericsson Satio
The Sony Ericsson Satio is already available to pre-order on Vodafone, but why should you plump for this instead of the iPhone? Well, for starters it has a 12.1-megapixel sensor for printing of pictures at whopping A2 size! That’s not all, though. The Satio’s also set to be one of the top multimedia mobiles around thanks to an awesome 3.5-inch touchscreen, Walkman tech baked in, and awesome internet-browsing thanks to a WebKit engine. Oh and there’s A-GPS too…

2. Vodafone 360 Samsung H1
Just announced last week, the Samsung H1 will sport Voda’s newest service: Vodafone 360. That means all your social networking contacts in one convenient place and all the extra benefits that come with it. The handset itself is primed for some iPhone-baiting with an eye-teasing 3.5-inch AMOLED display that puts other touchscreens to shame. Elsewhere the 720p video capture and five-megapixel sensor make this a mean multimedia mobile to boot. Expect it to hit Vodafone stores later this month.

3. Nokia N97
The Nokia N97 is already out and the Finnish company’s flagship mobile phone. In fact Nokia’s kitted this out with so many talents it could go on Britain’s Got Talent and win (although that’s not really saying much). Aside from the best slide-out keyboard ever created for a mobile phone, the N97 also has a glimmering 3.5-inch touchscreen and enough storage space (up to 48GB with a microSD card) to hold all your music and movies and then some. N97 a bit bulky for you? No problem. The Nokia N97 Mini’s out later this month…

4. Sony Ericsson Xperia X2
Another Sony Ericsson mobile phone here. Sporting the new Windows Mobile 6.5 OS you’ll be able to run all sorts of apps on the Xperia X2’s panel-led homescreen. Elsewhere you’ll find a fairly hefty eight-megapixel sensor for taking sizeable snappy snaps, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a Walkman-quality music player (even if the Walkman-branding has gone AWOL). It’s even got a TV-out slot so you can playback files from your phone on a TV. Nice touch Sony Ericsson.

5. HTC Tattoo
Okay, so the Tattoo might not be as powerful as the iPhone, but it is an awesome affordable equivalent, made all the more appealing by HTC’s Sense skin over the top of the Google Android OS. Multimedia-wise, the Tattoo brings you a 3.2-megapixel camera (same as the iPhone’s), access to thousands of apps on Android Market, and a plush 3.2-inch touchscreen for watching back videos and flicking through snaps. It’s nice and petite too.

So you’ve seen the iPhone rivals, but will you still splash out on Apple’s handset when it hits Vodafone next year? Let us know…

You gotta be kidding: The N97 looks great on paper but anybody who actually owned one can tell you that it’s a raging suckfest. I speak from personal experience on this matter.

Meanwhile the Windows 6.5 phones on your list are only good if you are totally married to the Microsoft way.

Until the next wave of Android phones come along we are torn between the dying-days of Symbian and Apple’s slick but locked-down product.
